Budget phones always promise a big camera number. This time it is 50MP. However, the real question is does it actually deliver good photos?

I bought the Vivo Y19s and used it for 6 months During this time I took hundreds of photos. In addition, I tested it in sunlight, indoors, at night, and for videos.

My Real Camera Test – Day Photos

First, I started testing in the morning when the light was bright. As a result, the 50MP sensor did a good job.

Besides that, colors looked natural and not too punchy. For example, green trees and blue sky came out really well. Also, detail was sharp in the center. Even if you zoom in 2x, you can still read small text on boards.

On top of that, dynamic range is okay for a budget phone. The bright sky did not blow out completely. At the same time, shadows had some detail too. Because of this, HDR mode helps a lot. It takes 1 second to process but the result is better.

Lastly, focus speed is fast because of PDAF. So tap to focus works instantly. Overall, I had no issues with missed shots.

Portrait Mode Test

Next, let’s talk about portrait mode. Vivo Y19s uses the main 50MP camera and software to blur the background.

To begin with, in good light, edge detection is decent. For instance, hair and ears are mostly clean. In addition, the blur looks smooth and not artificial. You can also adjust the blur level before taking the shot.

However, if the background is busy like tree leaves, it sometimes makes mistakes. Similarly, in indoor light, the blur is less strong. Despite this, for a budget phone, I was happy with the results. In short, it is perfect for Instagram selfies.

Low Light and Night Mode Test

Now this is where most budget phones struggle. Therefore I tested it at night outside and inside my room.

Without night mode, photos are dark and noisy. As a result, details look soft. On the other hand, when you turn on Night Mode, the phone takes 2-3 seconds and brightens the image.

Because of night mode, noise reduces a lot. Moreover, street lights look cleaner and colors are more visible. However, it is not magic. If there is zero light, the photo will still be dark. Fortunately, the Ring-LED flash helps for close objects.

In conclusion, night photos are usable. You can post them online. Still, don’t expect flagship level clarity.

Front Camera – 5MP Selfie Test

Moving on to the front camera. The front camera is 5MP which is low on paper. Nevertheless, in real use it is okay for video calls.

For example, in daylight, selfies are clear. Also, skin tone looks natural. There is no heavy beauty filter by default. You can add filters later if you want.

On the other hand, in low light, the 5MP sensor struggles. Consequently, photos get grainy. The screen flash helps a little bit. All in all, for WhatsApp video calls, it is fine.

Video Test – 1080p @ 30fps

Finally, let’s check video. Vivo Y19s records 1080p video at 30fps. Note that there is no 4K here.

During the day, video is stable if your hands are steady. In addition, colors are good and audio is clear.

However, there is no strong stabilization. Thus walking videos look a bit shaky. Similarly, indoor video is okay with enough light. But in dark places, video gets noisy.

Overall, for YouTube Shorts and family videos, this is good enough. Just remember to hold the phone steady.
